Boombox, one of the top renowned Ukrainian music bands, performed on December 16th in Lviv, supporting the release of their latest EP. The local Palace of Sports “Ukraine” became a venue for the big event and was equipped with MAG Audio sound systems for this concert.
Main hangs were represented by 2 clusters of MAG Hornet 12, each comprising 8 passive modules based on 2×12’’ drivers, with a sound pressure of 142db. To provide low-end coverage, along the stage were deployed 12 MAG Hornet Sub 18 subwoofers – passive systems with 2×18’’ drivers, set up into 4 CSA clusters.
Preliminary positioning and directivity of line array, as well as calculation of coverage and sound pressure, were easy to obtain with the help of the acoustic simulation program Ease Focus. Technical features of MAG Hornet 12, needed for the calculation and modeling, are already present in the database and available for download at the official website of AFMG Focus and products page.
Smooth sound coverage of the near-stage area was provided by MAG Wave 10 modules. It’s a passive system with 2×10’’ drivers in its heart with a sound pressure of 134 dB and 110° horizontal disclosure angles.
The floor monitor line comprised several cabinets of MAG Focus 15 – passive coaxial 15’’+3’’ monitors with 129 dB of sound pressure. The construction of MAG Focus 15 includes a rotating horn, which allows changing disclosure angles (40° x 60° or 60° x 40°) and makes its usage significantly easier.
All sound systems were powered by Powersoft products with DSP processing and Armonia software.
Igor Melnik, FOH sound engineer:
“It’s not the first experience of working with MAG Hornet 12 and the impression, in general, is very positive. The line array sounds clearly and uniformly throughout all frequency ranges, without any serious corrections needed, and high sound pressure allows for saving the dynamics and the peculiarities of songs and the concert in total. I was very pleased with the subwoofers: powerful and punchy lows with minimal resonance distortion.
Of course, there are still some controversial points and “raw” ones – in construction and in sound itself as well. However, the product is a recent one, so, I guess, most of them will be improved.
The venue – “Ukraine” Palace of Sports – is quite a tricky one, full of all the known sound “delights” – reverberation, standing waves, tinging and binging surfaces”.
Such was the concert in Lviv, a concluding one in the first part of the band’s music tour. Boombox, a band with over 10 years on stage and hundreds of thousands of fans all over Ukraine, Europe, and the USA, has already announced the second part of the tour in spring 2018.
Special thanks to Artmax Engineering company for the technical supply of the event and to Ihor Melnik for helping with the preparation of this material.
